Many well-known artists today like Justin Bieber, Charice Pempengco and Christina Grimmie (The Voice contestant Season 6) rose to fame because of Youtube, a social-networking site specifically for videos where it can be uploaded and shared. One of these include Sam Tsui and Kurt Hugo Schneider. These two men have been collaborating since they were in high school even up to their college days in Yale; Sam as the singer and Kurt as the producer. Their amazing covers and medleys uploaded on their Youtube account (here and here) went viral that not only engaged them to projects such as the College Musical but also made them as one of the most successful Youtube artists today.
I have been subscribing to their channel since 2010, so did my best friend Anna. Since then, we’ve been listening and downloading their covers and medleys and now, songs from Sam’s original album, Make It Up. This is why I wanted her to be my concert buddy in watching Sam and Kurt. Our dreams of meeting them turned reel to real!
Actress and singer Rita De Guzman of GMA7 was the opening act. She sang three songs and one of them was an original written by her.
The crowd went wild when silhouettes of men two men entered the stage. That would be Sam’s guitarist Jason Pitts and drummer Joel Manduke. The crowd went even wilder when Sam and Kurt finally entered – Anna and I included.
Sam sang his own versions of top hits and medleys; as well as own-written songs from his original album. One of my favourite tracks had to be “Bring Me The Night” that he sang with Rita De Guzman, originally with Kina Grannis, another well-known YouTube artist. In between songs they tossed goodies such as signed t-shirts and ballers to the audience. While Sam went backstage for his next outfit, Kurt took video selfies of us “going quiet” and “going wild”. Everyone in the audience was participative.
This is Kurt trying to let everyone settle down for the video selfie.
Kurt and Sam confessed that in the “Cups” video uploaded on their Youtube channel, they had to retake it ‘like 50 times’ due to the amount of errors omitted. They were relieved they made none during their performance at Manila.
The Philippines is the only country where Sam and Kurt performed twice. They are excited to try balut, a boiled chick normally sold as street food here in the Philippines. Before singing Bring Me The Night, Sam even says that “this song is about missing someone far away and thats how I’m gonna feel about you guys when I leave.” Both Sam and Kurt promised to come back and hopefully a longer stay.
When the concert was over, Anna and I got the setlist from the crew and had Jason and Joel sign it after the show.
We got two tight hugs from Sam and Kurt. Kurt still remembers Anna from the shoutout video Anna’s sister took of when she was still in the US. Sam and Kurt really have a special place in their heart for their fans. This meet and greet was just a click and go kind-of-session so our photos with Kurt and Sam are courtesy of Starmedia Entertainment. 🙂
We got to interact with Joel and Jason at the end of the show before meeting Sam and Kurt. They were asking us to teach them Tagalog phrases in which they ended up writing some of them on their autographs for us.

One happy Thursday indeed!
